Annakkuzhiyum Vaigaiyum Azhaitha Padalam (அன்னக் குழியும் வைகையும் அழைத்த படலம்)
"Annakkuzhiyum Vaigaiyum Azhaitha Padalam" is the 8th chapter in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam.
This chapter translates to "The Chapter where the Rice Pit and the River Vaigai Were Summoned/Created." It is a legendary and festive story that focuses on how Lord Shiva arranged an impossibly grand feast to feed the massive army of guests attending His divine wedding with Goddess Meenakshi.
The Story
1. The Arrival of the Massive Wedding Crowd
For the grand divine wedding (Thirukalyanam) of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Somasundarar in Madurai, millions of guests—including celestial beings (Devas), sages, kings, musicians, and armies from across the cosmos—arrived in the city.
2. The Challenge of Feeding the Multitude
Feeding such an infinite, uncounted crowd of divine and mortal guests presented an immense logistical nightmare. The royal kitchens of Madurai were completely overwhelmed, and it seemed impossible to prepare enough food to satisfy the bottomless appetites of the celestial guests and sages.
3. Creating the Annakkuzhi (The Rice Pit)
Stepping in to solve the crisis, Lord Shiva used His divine powers to orchestrate a miraculous feast. A massive pit—known as the Annakkuzhi (the Rice Pit or Cooking Trench)—was dug on the outskirts of Madurai. Within this gigantic pit, mountains of rice, rivers of ghee, curries, and sweets were cooked simultaneously on a cosmic scale, ensuring an inexhaustible supply of food for everyone.
4. Summoning the River Vaigai
With massive amounts of food being cooked, an enormous volume of water was desperately needed for drinking, cleaning, and washing utensils after the feast. To supply this vital water, Lord Shiva summoned the sacred River Vaigai, commanding it to flow directly past Madurai in a full, rushing stream to serve the massive gathering.
5. The Grand Feast
Every single guest—from the highest sages to the humblest attendees—was fed to absolute satisfaction (Annadhanam). The feast went down in history as the greatest banquet ever hosted, orchestrated entirely through divine will to honor the wedding guests.
