Ellam Valla Siththaraana Padalam (எல்லாம் வல்ல சித்தரான படலம்)

"Ellam Valla Siththaraana Padalam" is the 20th chapter in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam.

This chapter translates to "The Chapter where He Became the All-Powerful Mystic (Siddhar)." It serves as the direct prologue and introduction to the famous stone-elephant story, setting up why Lord Shiva chose to walk the streets of Madurai disguised as an omnipotent mystic.

The Story

1. The Divine Plan to Teach a Lesson

During the reign of King Abisheka Pandiyan, the city of Madurai was peaceful, prosperous, and deeply devoted to Lord Somasundarar. However, in the surrounding regions and even among some proud scholars and royal courtiers within the city, a sense of intellectual arrogance began to grow. People started boasting about their mastery over yoga, occult sciences (Siddhis), and magical arts, forgetting that all powers originate from the Divine.

To humble this growing ego and to demonstrate that He is the ultimate master of all mystical sciences, Lord Shiva decided to descend into the city in a new disguise.

2. The Descent of the Omnipotent Siddhar

One day, a mysterious, radiant, and awe-inspiring ascetic appeared on the streets of Madurai. He was the "Ellam Valla Siddhar" (literally meaning "The Mystic Who Can Do Anything"). He wore minimal clothing, his body was smeared with sacred ash, and his eyes radiated an intense, unearthly wisdom and power.

3. Marvels on the Streets

As the Siddhar walked through the bustling markets and public squares of Madurai, he effortlessly performed astonishing feats without any visible effort:

  • He could walk through solid walls and vanish into thin air.

  • He could alter his physical size at will.

  • He effortlessly demonstrated mastery over the elements, drawing crowds of mesmerized citizens who followed him in absolute wonder.

4. The Buzz Reaches the Palace

Word of this extraordinary mystic spread like wildfire through the city, eventually reaching the ears of King Abisheka Pandiyan. Intrigued, curious, and eager to test whether this wandering ascetic was a genuine master or a mere trickster, the King ordered his ministers to invite the Siddhar to the royal court—setting the stage for the famous confrontation where the Siddhar would bring a stone elephant to life to eat sugarcane.

Significance and Legacy

  • The Source of All Powers: This chapter establishes the theological premise that all mystic powers (Siddhis) pursued by yogis are merely a fraction of the infinite power held by the Supreme Lord.

  • The Playful Divine (Leela): It highlights Lord Shiva's recurring motif of stepping out of the sanctum to walk among His people in disguise, proving that the Divine is intimately connected with the everyday life and culture of Madurai.
