Virutha Kumara Balarana Padalam (விருத்த குமார பாலரான படலம்)

"Virutha Kumara Balarana Padalam" is the 23rd chapter in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam.

This chapter translates to "The Chapter where the Lord Appeared as an Old Man, a Youth, and a Child." It is a deeply emotional story that highlights Lord Shiva's supreme compassion, showcasing how He transforms into different ages to protect, feed, and liberate a devoted young girl from the hardships of an unsympathetic household.

The Story

1. The Devout Couple and Daughter Gowri

During the reign of King Vikrama Pandiyan, a pious Brahmin couple named Virupakshan (or Virubasar) and Subaviruthai lived in Madurai. Though they lived righteous lives and regularly practiced Annadhanam (feeding devotees), they were childless for a long time. Through intense prayers to Lord Somasundarar and Goddess Meenakshi, they were finally blessed with a baby girl whom they named Gowri.

2. The Spiritual Quest and Upadesam

Gowri grew up with profound devotion to Lord Shiva. When she was just five years old, she approached her father and asked him to teach her the ultimate spiritual mantra that could destroy the cycle of birth and death (Piravi Noi). Deeply moved, Virupakshan initiated her into the sacred mantra of Parashakthi (Goddess Amman). Gowri spent her youth constantly chanting the mantra and serving Shaivite devotees.

3. The Unfortunate Marriage

As Gowri reached marriageable age, a young man from a Vaishnavite family came to Virupakshan's home as a guest. Impressed by his conduct, and without fully realizing the intense sectarian differences of the times, Virupakshan gave his daughter Gowri in marriage to this young man, sending her off to live with her husband's family.

4. The Hostile Household and Confinement

Gowri’s new family members were staunchly orthodox followers of a different tradition who looked down upon her absolute devotion to Lord Shiva. Because she refused to give up her worship of Shiva and continued her practice of feeding Shaivite devotees, her in-laws grew fiercely hostile. They treated her cruelly, locked her up in a lonely, separate room, and bolted the doors from the outside to prevent her from interacting with the outside world or performing her daily prayers and charity.

5. The Divine Forms (Virutha, Kumara, Bala)

Trapped inside the locked room, Gowri wept bitterly, surrendering her life completely to Lord Shiva. Moved by her pure, unyielding devotion, Lord Shiva decided to rescue her Himself, manifesting in three different stages of life within the locked room:

  • As an Old Man (Viruthan): First, the Lord appeared as an elderly, frail sage, breaking through the locked doors to receive food and worship from Gowri.

  • As a Youth (Kumaran): He then transformed into a radiant young man.

  • As a Child (Balan): Finally, He transformed into a sweet, divine infant, bringing immense joy and spiritual solace to the distressed girl.

6. The Discovery and Liberation

Later that day, when Gowri's in-laws returned and unlocked the doors, they were shocked to find the heavy bolts still closed from the outside, yet Gowri was sitting happily inside with a divine child. Infuriated and confused, they interrogated her harshly.

Before the family could harm or humiliate her further, the divine child revealed His true, cosmic form of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Radiating blinding divine light, the Lord blessed Gowri, shattered the worldly bonds holding her down, and granted her ultimate liberation (Moksha) right then and there.

Significance and Legacy

  • The Three Stages of Life: The title of the chapter (Virutha, Kumara, Bala) highlights the playful forms (Leela) the Lord took—showing that God can adapt to any role to comfort a suffering devotee.

  • Devotion Over Sectarianism: The story subtly critiques rigid religious bigotry and sectarian conflicts, emphasizing that true, pure love for the Divine (Bhakti) supersedes earthly disputes and catches the immediate attention of God.
