Kallanaikku Karumburuttiya Padalam (கல் யானைக்குக் கரும்பு அருத்திய படலம்)
Based on the spelling and context, you are likely referring to "Kallanaikku Karumburuttiya Padalam" (often misremembered or typed colloquially), which is the 21st chapter in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam.
This chapter translates to "The Chapter where Sugar cane was Fed to the Stone Elephant." It is one of the most famous and entertaining stories showcasing Lord Shiva's playful mystic powers (Leela).
The Story
1. The Royal Skepticism
During the reign of Abisheka Pandiyan, a mysterious and extraordinary yogi known as the "Ellam Valla Siddhar" (The All-Powerful Mystic—who was actually Lord Shiva in disguise) appeared in Madurai. He performed incredible spiritual feats across the city, astounding ordinary citizens with his powers. When reports of this mystic reached the royal court, King Abisheka Pandiyan grew skeptical. Intrigued yet doubtful, the King sent his ministers to summon the Siddhar to the palace.
2. The Royal Confrontation
When the Siddhar arrived in the royal court, the King looked at him with skepticism and asked, "People say you can perform great miracles. If you possess true divine powers, show me something right here in my court!"
3. The Stone Elephant Challenge
At that time, sculptors were carving a massive stone statue of an elephant near the royal premises. Pointing toward the heavy, lifeless rock sculpture, the King mockingly challenged the mystic: "If you are truly a powerful Siddhar, make this stone elephant come alive and eat a stalk of sugarcane!"
4. The Miracle
The Siddhar smiled calmly. He took a fresh, thick stalk of sugarcane, walked up to the massive stone sculpture, and gently touched it with his hand while uttering a divine command.
Instantly, a miraculous transformation occurred. The cold, inanimate stone elephant sprang to life! It blinked its eyes, let out a trumpeting sound, stretched out its trunk, snatched the sugarcane from the mystic, crushed it, and happily ate it—astonishing the King and the entire court.
5. The Pearl Necklace
Having consumed the sugarcane, the living elephant turned its trunk toward the stunned King, playfully grabbed the valuable pearl necklace right off the King's neck, and swallowed it.
Panicked that his royal jewelry was eaten by a miraculous beast, the King ordered his guards to capture the Siddhar. But the moment the guards rushed forward, the Siddhar immobilized them instantly, turning them frozen like statues.
6. The King's Surrender
Realizing that he was dealing with the Supreme Lord Himself disguised as a mystic, King Abisheka Pandiyan panicked. He fell flat on the ground, begged for forgiveness, and surrendered completely to the Siddhar.
Pleased by the King's repentance, the Siddhar restored the guards, made the elephant return to its original stone form (leaving the pearl necklace safely accessible), and blessed the King before disappearing.
Significance and Legacy
-
The Illusion of Reality: This chapter highlights that creation and life are entirely under the control of the Divine. What is dead stone to human eyes can instantly become living reality through divine will.
-
Humbled Pride: It serves as another classic example in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam where temporal power (a King) tests spiritual power (God in disguise) and learns a humbling lesson about humility and faith.
