Maapadakam Theertha Padalam (மாபாதகம் தீர்த்த படலம்)
"Maapadakam Theertha Padalam" is the 26th chapter in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam.
This chapter translates to "The Chapter that Eradicated the Greatest Sins (Mahapatakam)." It is a powerful story about divine forgiveness, karmic redemption, and the supreme purifying power of Lord Shiva's sacred shrine in Madurai.
The Story
1. The Weight of Unforgivable Sins
In ancient Hindu philosophy, certain grave offenses are classified as Mahapatakam (the five great sins)—traditionally including killing a Brahmin (Brahmahatya), consuming alcohol, stealing gold, violating a Guru's bed, and associating with those who commit these acts. scriptures state that these heavy karmic burdens are nearly impossible to wash away, and those who commit them wander through endless cycles of suffering and lower births.
2. The Sinful Sufferer
A man who had committed several of these heinous, unforgivable sins (Maapadakam) was overwhelmed by the crushing weight of his terrible karma. Tormented by severe guilt, physical disease, and the constant fear of spiritual damnation, he realized that ordinary rituals, penances, or local temples could not save him.
Desperate for a ray of hope, he heard about the boundless compassion of Lord Somasundarar in the holy city of Madurai—a place where even the most impossible sins are dissolved by divine grace.
3. The Journey to Madurai
Leaving his past behind, the sinner undertook a long, arduous journey to Madurai. Upon arriving, he did not dare enter the sanctum directly with his heavily stained soul. Instead, he purified himself by bathing in the holy waters of the Potramarai Kulam (the Golden Lotus Tank) inside the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple.
4. The Plea for Mercy
Standing before the sanctum of Lord Shiva, the man fell flat on the stone floor. Overwhelmed with genuine remorse, he wept bitterly, confessing his monstrous crimes. He cried out: "Oh Lord, I am the most wretched sinner on Earth. I have committed crimes beyond forgiveness. If You do not save me, I am eternally lost!"
5. The Eradication of Sins
Lord Shiva, whose primary title is Bhaktavatsalan (the lover of His devotees) and whose compassion knows no bounds, listened to the man's tearful repentance.
The moment true, heartfelt remorse met divine grace, a miracle occurred. The heavy, dark cloud of karma surrounding the man instantly vanished. An ethereal voice (Asariri) boomed from the sanctum, reassuring him that his sins had been completely burned away. He was purified, absolved of all his past misdeeds, and granted inner peace and eventual salvation.
