Vidai Ilachinai Itta Padalam (விடை இலச்சினை இட்ட படலம்)

"Vidai Ilachinai Itta Padalam" is the 34th chapter in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam.

This chapter translates to "The Chapter where the Bull Seal was Affixed." (Vidai means Bull/Nandi, and Ilachinai means Seal or Emblem). It is a beautiful story that illustrates how God’s grace transcends political borders, enmities, and even the royal authority of kings.

The Story

1. The Devout Enemy King

While King Kulabhooshana Pandiyan was ruling Madurai, the city of Kanchipuram was ruled by a Chola monarch known as Kaadu Vettiya Cholan (so named because he cleared forests to build his city). Though he was a Chola ruler, he was an incredibly ardent devotee of Lord Shiva.

The Chola King harbored a deep, burning desire to visit Madurai and worship Lord Somasundarar and Goddess Meenakshi. However, the Pandyas and Cholas were bitter enemies during this period. A royal visit was impossible, and if he were caught in Madurai territory, it would mean certain war or death.

2. The Divine Dream

Distressed that his political boundaries were stopping his spiritual journey, the Chola King prayed to Lord Shiva. That night, Lord Shiva appeared in his dream as a mystic (Siddhar).

The Lord told him: "Do not worry. Leave your royal robes behind, disguise yourself as a humble Shaivite devotee, and travel to Madurai alone at night. I will personally arrange for your darshan."

3. The Flooded River and the Guide

Overjoyed, the Chola King secretly left Kanchipuram disguised as a poor ascetic. After a long journey, he finally reached Madurai in the dead of night. However, when he arrived at the banks of the Vaigai River, he found it heavily flooded and impossible to cross.

Suddenly, the same Siddhar from his dream appeared before him. The Siddhar gently took the disguised King by the hand, magically guided him safely across the raging river, and led him straight to the entrance of the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple.

4. The Royal Fish Seal (Meen Ilachinai)

Because it was midnight, the massive doors of the temple were tightly shut and heavily locked. To ensure security, the Pandyan King's official royal emblem—the Fish Seal (Meen Ilachinai)—had been firmly affixed over the locks.

The Siddhar merely looked at the doors. Without breaking a single lock, the royal seals dissolved, and the heavy doors miraculously swung wide open. The Chola King rushed into the sanctum, weeping with joy, and experienced a blissful, uninterrupted darshan of Lord Somasundarar.

5. The Divine Bull Seal (Vidai Ilachinai)

After the King finished his prayers, he exited the sanctum. The Siddhar closed the temple doors. However, to re-seal them, the Siddhar did not put the Pandyan King's Fish Seal back. Instead, He miraculously stamped the doors with Lord Shiva's own divine emblem: the Bull Seal (Vidai Ilachinai).

The Siddhar then guided the Chola King back across the Vaigai river, blessed him, and vanished into thin air. The Chola King returned to Kanchipuram safely, his life's greatest desire fulfilled.

6. The Pandyan King's Realization

The next morning, the temple priests and guards arrived and were shocked. The Pandyan King's Fish Seal was gone, and a glowing, unearthly Bull Seal had taken its place. They immediately rushed to King Kulabhooshana Pandiyan to report the breach.

The Pandyan King was completely baffled as to how his royal seal had been tampered with. That night, Lord Shiva appeared in his dream and explained everything: "Your rival, the Chola King, came to see Me with pure devotion. I opened the doors for him and sealed them back with My own crest."

Realizing the truth, Kulabhooshana Pandiyan was deeply humbled. He understood that in the eyes of God, there are no "enemy kings"—only devotees. He marveled at the Lord's compassion and worshipped the divine Bull Seal left on the temple doors.

Significance and Legacy

  • Divine Authority over Earthly Authority: The replacing of the Fish Seal with the Bull Seal is deeply symbolic. It represents that God's authority always supersedes the authority of earthly kings and governments. The King may own the city, but the Lord owns the temple.

  • Devotion Knows No Borders: This chapter beautifully illustrates that spirituality breaks down political and geographical boundaries. Lord Shiva, the patron deity of the Pandyas, acted as a personal guide to their greatest political rival simply because of the rival's pure devotion.

  • The Accessible God: Unlike a mortal king who requires appointments and protocol, Lord Somasundarar opened His doors at midnight for a disguised, traveling pilgrim, proving that God is always accessible to a crying heart.
