Pandrik Kuttikku Mulai Kodutha Padalam (பன்றிக்குட்டிக்கு முலை கொடுத்த படலம்)

"Pandrik Kuttikku Mulai Kodutha Padalam" is the 43rd chapter in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam.

This chapter translates to "The Chapter where the Piglets were Nursed (Given Milk)." It is the direct prequel to the story you asked about previously (where the piglets became ministers) and is widely considered one of the most moving demonstrations of God's boundless, unconditional love.

The Story

1. The Celestial Curse

In the heavenly realms, a celestial being (Vidyadhara) and his wife behaved arrogantly and disturbed the penance of a great sage. Angered by their disrespect, the sage cursed them to be born on Earth as wild pigs. The couple descended to the forests surrounding Madurai, living as beasts. In time, the mother pig gave birth to a litter of 12 piglets.

2. The Royal Hunt

One day, the reigning Pandyan King, Rajaraja Pandiyan, ventured into the forest for a royal hunt. During the expedition, the king's hunting dogs and soldiers cornered the fierce parent pigs. A violent struggle ensued, and the King ultimately killed both the father and mother pigs with his arrows, unaware that they had left a litter behind.

3. The Starving Orphans

Hidden deep in the bushes were the 12 newborn piglets. With their parents dead, the tiny creatures were entirely helpless. They wandered around the forest crying out in hunger, slowly starving to death, with no one to protect or feed them.

4. The Divine Mother

From His sanctum in Madurai, Lord Somasundarar (Shiva) heard the agonizing cries of the orphaned piglets. The Lord, who is the father and mother of all creation, was moved by infinite compassion (Karunai).

He did not send a servant or a lesser deity to help them. Instead, setting aside all divine majesty, Lord Shiva miraculously transformed Himself into the physical form of a large mother pig. He rushed into the dense forest, lay down in the mud beside the weeping piglets, and lovingly nursed all 12 of them with His own divine breast milk.

5. The Awakening

Because the milk they drank was not ordinary milk but the divine essence of the Supreme Lord, a miracle occurred. The moment the milk touched their lips, the piglets' animal ignorance, hunger, and past karmic debts were instantly completely erased. They drank the milk of cosmic wisdom, which set the stage for their transformation into the brilliant, boar-faced youths who would soon become the King's ministers (as detailed in the 44th chapter).

Significance and Legacy

  • The Ultimate Compassion (Daya): This chapter is celebrated as the pinnacle of divine mercy. It illustrates that God's love knows no bounds of form, species, or status. The Supreme Creator of the universe did not hesitate to take the form of a lowly animal and lie in the mud just to comfort a crying, orphaned beast.

  • The Motherhood of God: In Shaiva Siddhanta, God is often worshipped as Ammaiappan (Both Mother and Father). By taking the form of a nursing mother, Lord Shiva perfectly demonstrated maternal love, proving that He is the universal mother who will personally feed His starving children.

  • Temple Worship: Inside the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple, there is a dedicated sculptural pillar and shrine depicting Lord Shiva in the form of a mother pig feeding the piglets. Devotees often pray here for the protection and well-being of their children.
